You do not need to leave the San Juan area to find a great beach. Here are the beaches visitors ask about most, from the closest to the farthest.
Isla Verde Beach
A wide, sandy beach lined with hotels, about 5 minutes from the airport. It is a good all-around choice for swimming, walking and water sports. This is where our jet ski rentals and surf school are based.
Condado Beach
A popular city beach with restaurants and shops nearby. The water can be calmer than other stretches of the coast, which suits families and first-time swimmers.
Ocean Park
A local favorite with a relaxed feel and room to spread out. Popular for walking, kite flying and sunbathing.
Piñones
A more natural coastline east of Isla Verde, known for its kiosks selling local fried food. Currents can be strong in places, so check conditions and swim only where it is safe.
Luquillo Beach
A calm, palm-lined beach about 45 minutes east of San Juan, with food kiosks nearby. A good pairing with a visit to El Yunque.

How to Pick the Right Beach
The best beach depends on what you want from the day. Families with small kids usually want calm water and easy facilities. Surfers want waves. Sunbathers want space and shade. San Juan has a beach for each of these, and most are a short ride apart.
Beach Safety Basics
- Check the flag and conditions posted at the beach before you swim.
- Swim near lifeguards when they are on duty.
- Rip currents can form on any open-ocean beach. If caught, swim parallel to shore, not against it.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and reapply after swimming.
- Keep valuables out of sight and never leave bags unattended.
What to Bring
A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a towel, water and a waterproof phone pouch cover most needs. Water shoes help on rocky stretches. Many beaches near hotels offer chair and umbrella rentals, which can be easier than hauling your own.
Best Time of Day for the Beach
Mornings are usually the calmest, with lighter wind and smaller crowds. Midday brings strong sun and the most visitors. Late afternoon light is beautiful, and the water often stays warm into the evening. Winter is busy season, and weekends fill up faster than weekdays.
Beach Plus Activity
Pairing a beach morning with an activity makes the day feel complete. Surf lessons, paddleboarding, snorkeling and jet ski rides all start from the sand in this part of the island. Isla Verde works especially well because food, hotels and rentals are all within a few minutes of the water.
Beach Day Etiquette
Pack out your trash, keep music at a considerate volume, and give surfers and swimmers plenty of room. Respect any posted signs, and do not feed or chase wildlife. Locals love sharing their beaches when visitors treat them well.
