San Juan packs history, beaches, food and nightlife into one compact city. If this is your first visit, this guide covers what to do and how to fit it in, whether you have one day or a week.
1. Walk Old San Juan
The seven-block old city is known for its blue cobblestone streets, colorful colonial buildings, plazas and small shops. Go early in the morning, before the heat and the cruise crowds, and wear comfortable shoes because the streets are hilly.
2. Visit El Morro
Castillo San Felipe del Morro guards the entrance to San Juan Bay and is part of the San Juan National Historic Site. Bring water and a hat; there is little shade on the grounds. Prefer to see it from the water? Our El Morro jet ski ride passes right beside the fortress walls.
3. Spend a beach day
San Juan has several city beaches. Condado is lively and has calm water, and Isla Verde is wide and sandy and close to the airport. Read our guide to the best beaches near San Juan.
4. Try a water sport
Jet skis, surf lessons and beach chairs are all available on Isla Verde. A jet ski ride is one of the easiest ways to see the coastline and cool off. See jet ski rentals in Isla Verde.
5. Eat local
Look for mofongo, tostones, alcapurrias, fresh seafood and a cold coffee or piña colada. The kiosks in Piñones, east of Isla Verde, are a classic stop for fried snacks by the sea.
6. Take a day trip
El Yunque rainforest, Luquillo beach and the bioluminescent bays are all within reach. See our day trips from San Juan.
Planning tips
- Bring sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle.
- Book popular activities ahead, especially in winter and on cruise days.
- Carry a little cash for kiosks and tips.
Eat Your Way Through the City
Puerto Rican food is a reason to visit on its own. Look for mofongo (mashed fried plantain with garlic), tostones, alcapurrias, pasteles, fresh seafood and strong coffee. Casual kiosks and family-run spots often beat the tourist-facing restaurants on both price and flavor. San Juan also claims the piña colada as a local invention, so a cold one on the beach is practically a tradition.
Visit the Forts
El Morro and San Cristóbal are the two great Spanish forts of Old San Juan, run by the National Park Service as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Plan about 1 to 2 hours for each. Go early or late in the day, bring water, and wear shoes you can climb ramps in. The grassy field in front of El Morro is also one of the best places in the city to watch kites on a breezy afternoon.
Hit the Beach
You do not need a car to find sand. Isla Verde has wide, soft beach, calm water on most mornings and plenty of hotels, restaurants and rentals. Condado is lively and walkable. Ocean Park is popular with locals and kite surfers. Always check flags and conditions before swimming, and never turn your back on the surf.
Get on the Water
Seeing the island from the sea changes how you understand it. Options include kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling and surf lessons. A jet ski ride is the fastest way to cover a lot of coast. From San Juan Bay you can ride along the walls of El Morro and see the fortress from a view most visitors never get.
How to Get Around
Old San Juan is best on foot, and parking there is limited, so many visitors use rideshare or taxis. Isla Verde is only a short ride from the San Juan airport (SJU), which makes it a good first or last stop on your trip. If you plan day trips outside the metro area, a rental car gives you the most freedom.
Sample 3-Day Plan
- Day 1: Old San Juan on foot, El Morro, lunch at a local spot, sunset on the walls.
- Day 2: Morning at Isla Verde Beach, lunch nearby, an afternoon jet ski ride or surf lesson, dinner in Condado.
- Day 3: A day trip outside the city, such as El Yunque rainforest or a bioluminescent bay tour, and a final dinner in San Juan.
Rainy Day Backup Plans
Tropical showers pass quickly, but a few indoor options help. Museums, galleries, cafes and shops in Old San Juan are all easy to duck into. Many rain showers clear within an hour, so it is often worth waiting before canceling a water activity. Check the forecast the morning of your plans.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Underestimating the sun. Reapply sunscreen often.
- Packing the schedule too tight. Heat slows everyone down.
- Waiting until the day of to book popular activities.
- Skipping local food for resort meals.
