San Juan is a great base. These day trips are all doable without staying overnight.
El Yunque National Forest
A tropical rainforest east of San Juan with waterfalls, trails and viewpoints. Go early, bring rain gear and check current access and reservation requirements before you leave.
Luquillo Beach and kiosks
A calm beach and a strip of food kiosks, often combined with El Yunque.
Fajardo and the east coast
Fajardo is the launch point for bioluminescent bay tours and for boats to nearby islands. See our bioluminescent bays guide.
Piñones
A short drive from Isla Verde. Local food, a natural coastline and bike paths.
Plan a rest day on the water
After a busy day trip, a short jet ski ride on Isla Verde is a relaxed way to enjoy the coast. See ride options near you.
El Yunque Rainforest
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system and sits roughly an hour from San Juan. Expect waterfalls, short trails and humid, changeable weather. Check the current status of trails, access and any reservation requirements before you go, since rules can change. Wear shoes with grip and bring a light rain jacket.
Fajardo and the East Coast
The northeast corner of the island is the launch point for boat trips, snorkeling and the offshore islands of Culebra and Vieques. Fajardo also has one of the island’s famous bioluminescent bays. This is a full-day trip, so start early.
Luquillo and the Kiosks
Luquillo Beach is a family favorite with calm, shallow water and a long row of food kiosks nearby. It is an easy stop on the way to or from El Yunque.
Cueva Ventana and Arecibo Area
West of San Juan along the north coast, you will find caves, cliffs and big views. Roads can be slow, so give yourself plenty of time.
Planning Tips
- Leave early. Traffic around San Juan builds in the morning and evening.
- Bring cash, water and snacks.
- Download offline maps, since cell service can be uneven in the mountains.
- Pair a day trip with a lighter day on the water to balance the schedule.
Saving Time for the Water
If your trip is short, consider one big day trip and spend the rest of your time near San Juan. A jet ski ride, a surf lesson or a beach day all fit easily into the metro area.
