Puerto Rico Bioluminescent Bays: What to Know

Puerto Rico Bioluminescent Bays: What to Know

Puerto Rico is known for its bioluminescent bays, where tiny organisms light up the water when it is disturbed. It is one of the most memorable night activities on the island.

Where to go

The best-known bays are Laguna Grande near Fajardo on the east coast, La Parguera on the southwest coast, and Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques. Fajardo is the closest to San Juan.

When to go

Darker nights, around the new moon, usually show the brightest glow. Tours run at night, so plan transportation back to your hotel.

What to bring

  • Swimwear and a towel if your tour allows swimming
  • Insect repellent
  • A phone in a waterproof pouch (photos of the glow are difficult)

Respect the bay

Avoid wearing sunscreen or bug spray in the water, since it can harm the bay. Follow your guide’s instructions.

Pair it with a day on the water

Spend the day on a jet ski in San Juan and the evening on a bay tour. See our Isla Verde jet ski rentals.

Choosing a Bay

Puerto Rico is known for its glowing bays, where tiny organisms called dinoflagellates light up blue-green when the water moves. The island’s best-known bays are in Fajardo, Vieques and La Parguera. Each has a different feel. Some tours use kayaks, others use electric boats, and conditions and access rules vary by location.

Best Conditions to See the Glow

The darker the sky, the brighter the glow. Nights with little or no moon are generally best, while a full moon washes out the effect. Clear weather helps too. Book a tour on a new moon if you can, and expect that heavy rain can change conditions.

What to Bring on a Night Tour

  • Insect repellent applied before you go
  • A quick-dry change of clothes
  • A waterproof phone pouch (flash photography is typically discouraged)
  • Water shoes if you plan to swim where it is allowed

Protecting the Bays

These ecosystems are fragile. Many operators ask guests not to wear sunscreen or bug spray into the water in the bays where swimming is allowed, so ask your operator what applies. Follow your guide’s rules, and treat the water gently.

Getting There From San Juan

The bays are outside the San Juan metro area, so plan transportation in advance. Some tours include pickup, while others require you to drive. Allow extra travel time, and plan your return, since tours run after dark.

Pair It With a Daytime Activity

Many visitors spend the day on the water near San Juan and head out to a bay in the evening. A morning on the beach or a jet ski ride makes a great warm-up for a night under the stars.

Ride with WOW in San Juan
